The project aims to propose interventions to mitigate or reverse the impacts of soil sealing and to enhance urban resilience to climate change in Portuguese municipalities where urban areas exhibit a high degree of sealing. Based on this criterion, the municipalities of Matosinhos and Odivelas are currently the two case studies for the project.
Besides identifying intra-urban areas with potential for soil sealing reversal (such as, abandoned industrial sites, degraded vacant buildings, or car parks with impermeable paving) and those that could benefit from the development of NBS (e.g. creation of green/blue infrastructure or interconnection of existing infrastructure), the project will assess the vulnerability of urban areas to flooding, extreme heat, air pollution, as well as their vegetation deficit.
